Description
A historical novel set before and during the French Revolution. The story centers on the lives of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who bear a striking physical resemblance but are otherwise very different.
Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat, renounces his family’s corrupt legacy and moves to England. There, he marries Lucie Manette, the daughter of Dr. Alexandre Manette, who was wrongfully imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years. Darnay’s past, however, continues to haunt him, and he is eventually arrested during the revolution and sentenced to death for the crimes of his aristocratic family.
Sydney Carton, a dissolute English lawyer who loves Lucie from afar, recognizes the opportunity to give his wasted life meaning. In a heroic act of self-sacrifice, Carton switches places with Darnay and goes to the guillotine in his stead, ensuring Darnay’s escape and a future for Lucie and her family.
The novel explores themes of resurrection, sacrifice, and the duality of human nature, as well as the social injustices that lead to revolution. Carton’s final act of redemption embodies the hope that even the most lost souls can find purpose and grace.
